Roblox timed options let you buy a 3D avatar item for 3, 7 or 14 days instead of keeping it forever, and Roblox's marketplace documentation says those short purchases cost less than buying the item outright. The feature began as a test on 3D clothing the week of February 2, 2026, and an April 6, 2026 update on Roblox's developer forum said it was reaching some users across every 3D avatar item category except dynamic heads, bodies, shoes, animation packs and emotes. The permanent purchase button stays on the same page, which matters if you collect Limiteds, meaning items with a fixed number of copies that owners can resell to other players.
Quick answer: Timed options are a cheaper purchase that only lasts 3, 7 or 14 days. Roblox's documentation lists them for 3D shirts, pants and sweater categories, the April 2026 rollout widened that to most 3D categories for some users, and buying an item permanently is still available alongside them.
| Roblox timed options at a glance | What Roblox's own sources say |
|---|---|
| Lengths offered | 3, 7 or 14 days |
| Price | Cheaper than the permanent purchase |
| Categories in the documentation | 3D shirts, pants and sweaters |
| Categories excluded in the April 2026 expansion | Dynamic heads, bodies, shoes, animation packs, emotes |
| First test | Week of February 2, 2026 |
| Who turns it on | The creator, per item or in bulk |
| Permanent purchases | Still offered |
What are Roblox timed options? A 3, 7 or 14-day purchase at a lower price
Roblox's marketplace fees and commissions documentation puts it in one sentence: "Timed options allows users to purchase your items for a period of time of either 3, 7, or 14 days at a cheaper cost." Players call these rentals. Roblox's own names for them are timed options and time-based items.
The control sits with the creator. The January 2026 announcement says avatar creators "continue to have full control over which items they want to offer timed options for," with category-level toggles promised on top of the per-item and global ones. Roblox's documentation describes two ways to switch the feature on: in bulk from the Creations page by filtering avatar items down to clothing and using the Timed option button, or one item at a time from that item's Manage Item page. Once it's on, the docs say buyers "gain access to multiple purchase options for each available time range," so a single item page can show a 3-day price, a 7-day price, a 14-day price and the normal permanent price.
Roblox hasn't published the discount size. The documentation says "a cheaper cost" and stops there, so treat any specific figure you see quoted as somebody's guess.
Which Roblox items have timed options? 3D clothing first, then most 3D categories
Two official sources disagree slightly here, and the dates explain why.
The fee documentation says: "At this time, timed options are available for 3D shirts, pants, and sweater categories." That line describes the stage the feature was in when it was written.
Roblox's developer forum announcement Testing Time-based Avatar Items in February, posted January 20, 2026, set out the plan and said testing would start with a few categories. The first test ran from the week of February 2, 2026 on 3D clothing, and creators could opt out. An update added to that same thread on April 6, 2026 widened it: timed options would be available for some users across all 3D avatar item categories except dynamic heads, bodies, shoes, animation packs and emotes, and it said the permanent purchase option "is NOT going away."
Read those two together and the shape is clear. Timed options began in the clothing aisle and now reach almost everything 3D, including the hats and accessories where the Limited market actually lives. The phrase "some users" in that update is doing real work, though. Roblox rolls features out to slices of its player base, so you and a friend can open the same item page and see different buttons.
Can you resell an item bought with a timed option? Roblox hasn't said
This is the question a collector cares about, and the honest answer is that Roblox has published a lot about Limited resale and nothing specific about timed purchases.
What the documentation does establish:
- Only Roblox-created Limiteds can be traded player to player. Community-made UGC Limiteds (limited-copy items published by independent creators) change hands through Marketplace resale alone.
- Resale has to be enabled by the original creator, and once it's on for an item it can't be switched off later.
- After you buy a Limited there's a holding period of up to 30 days before you can resell it. Buying a copy from another reseller carries a shorter hold of up to 7 days. Our guide to Roblox holding periods walks through both clocks.
- Reselling a Limited requires an active Roblox Plus subscription on the seller's account. The buyer needs nothing.
- Every resale pays the original creator a 10% commission. The rest of a UGC Limited resale splits 50% to the reseller, 10% to the seller or affiliate and 30% to Roblox, so a reseller nets half of the sale price.
All of those rules describe owning a copy. A 3-day purchase gives you the item for 3 days, and Roblox has not documented what happens at the end of that window, whether a timed purchase counts against an item's copy supply, or how the Robux from one is split. Until Roblox publishes that, treat the timed button as access to wear something and nothing more.
The practical version: when you're buying an item you intend to hold or flip, check which option is selected before you confirm. Both options can sit on the same page, and the permanent one is the button that leaves you owning a copy.
How big is the market timed options touch? 1,924 clothing Limiteds out of 188,974
RBX Invest catalog data as of October 11, 2026 tracks 188,974 active UGC Limiteds and 2,563 Classic Limiteds, which are the ones Roblox made itself. Roblox's first test covered t-shirts, pants and sweaters. Group those with 3D shirts, the fourth clothing slot in our catalog, and the four categories hold 1,924 of those UGC Limiteds. That's barely 1% of the catalog.
It's also the cheap end. Of those 1,924 clothing Limiteds, 1,570 have ever recorded a RAP (Recent Average Price, a smoothed average of what an item has actually sold for), and the middle item among them sits at 267 Robux (R$). Hats and the main accessory slots, by contrast, account for 184,537 UGC Limiteds, and that's the group the April expansion opened up.
Not one of the 2,563 Classic Limiteds is a 3D shirt, t-shirt, sweater or pair of pants. Classic Limiteds are almost all hats, faces, gear and accessories, and the clothing slots hold just three Classic jackets and two Classic dresses or skirts, so the February test never touched them.
The biggest 3D clothing Limiteds by RAP
Here are the highest-RAP 3D clothing UGC Limiteds with a print of at least 10 copies, where "print" means how many copies were ever minted. Lowest ask is the cheapest copy listed for sale right now.
| Item | Copies | Launch price | RAP | Lowest ask |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 5,000 R$ | 16,433 R$ | None listed | |
| 15 | 5,000 R$ | 12,826 R$ | 20,000 R$ | |
| 500 | 500 R$ | 10,798 R$ | 17,999 R$ | |
| 55 | 123 R$ | 9,638 R$ | 11,675 R$ | |
| 100 | 250 R$ | 8,567 R$ | 6,999 R$ | |
| 100 | 500 R$ | 8,442 R$ | 14,750 R$ |
Five figures is the ceiling in this corner of the market. The gem-tier hats, the scarce items traders chase hardest, trade for hundreds of times that. You can browse the live rankings for these categories on our UGC Limited shirts, pants and sweaters collection pages, and the clothing Limiteds value guide covers how the whole category prices.
One detail in that table is worth a second look. Legs of Valor has a lowest ask of 6,999 R$ against a RAP of 8,567 R$, so the cheapest copy you can buy today is under the average of past sales. Thin markets do that. A couple of sales pull RAP around, and one seller who wants out sets the floor.
What timed options could mean for Limited prices
My read, offered as opinion, is that timed options compete with permanent purchases of ordinary catalog clothing far more than with Limiteds. If you want a hoodie for a weekend, a 3-day price is a fine deal. If you want a scarce item that 99 people own, a rental doesn't scratch that itch.
Two things are worth watching anyway.
The first is creator pricing. Roblox's fee documentation ties a creator's share of a Marketplace sale to how far the listed price sits above the price floor for that item type, meaning the minimum price Roblox allows for it, starting at 30% at the floor and climbing to 70% at six times the floor. A cheap short-term price sits near the bottom of that ladder. If timed purchases are paid out like any other Marketplace sale, which Roblox hasn't confirmed, creators keep a thinner slice of each one, and the volume has to make up for it.
The second is attention. Limited drops depend on the buzz of a launch, and every drop competes with whatever else the Marketplace is pushing. A catalog full of cheap trial options changes what a casual shopper clicks, and casual shoppers are where a lot of launch-day demand comes from.
Nothing here is financial advice. Robux spent on items can lose value, and a cosmetic you can't resell is simply money spent.
Facts in this article come from Roblox's marketplace fees and commissions documentation and the January 20, 2026 developer forum announcement with its April 6, 2026 update, both checked on October 11, 2026, plus RBX Invest catalog data as of October 11, 2026.
FAQ
What are timed options on Roblox?
Timed options are purchases that last 3, 7 or 14 days instead of forever. Roblox's marketplace documentation says they cost less than buying the item permanently, and the creator decides whether an item offers them.
How much do Roblox timed options cost?
Roblox has not published the prices or the discount. Its documentation says only that a timed purchase costs less than the permanent one, and the creator sets each item's price above the price floor Roblox allows for that item type.
Which Roblox items have timed options?
Roblox's fee documentation lists 3D shirts, pants and sweater categories. An April 6, 2026 developer forum update said timed options were reaching some users across all 3D avatar item categories except dynamic heads, bodies, shoes, animation packs and emotes.
Can you still buy Roblox items permanently?
Yes. Roblox's April 6, 2026 announcement said the permanent purchase option "is NOT going away," and both choices can appear on the same item page. Check which one is selected before you confirm a purchase.
Can you resell an item you bought with a timed option?
Roblox hasn't documented this. The resale rules it does publish cover owning a Limited copy: resale must be enabled by the creator, there's a holding period of up to 30 days after purchase, and reselling needs an active Roblox Plus subscription on the seller's account.
Do timed options affect Limited items?
Not the Classic ones so far. None of the 2,563 Classic Limiteds we track are 3D clothing, and the 3D clothing categories hold 1,924 of 188,974 UGC Limiteds as of October 11, 2026. The April 2026 expansion into hat and accessory categories brings timed options closer to the Limited market.
When did Roblox start timed options?
Roblox announced the test on January 20, 2026 and ran it from the week of February 2, 2026 on 3D clothing. An update on April 6, 2026 said the test went well and that the feature was expanding to most 3D avatar item categories for some users.
Why don't I see a timed option on an item?
The creator may not have turned it on, the item may be in one of the excluded categories, or you may not be in the rollout group. Roblox's April 2026 update said the feature was available "for some users," so two players can see different buttons on the same page.
